“Nothing is isolated, everything is connected in one way or another.”

Interview with kite designer Robert Brasington.

How did you get into kites?

Kite making was just a hobby for me, which then got completely out of hand. It was meant to be a casual pastime when I was living and working in the UK. A change of direction over 30 years ago has led me to where I am now.

Currently you have designed an eddy for Spiderkites, what did you come up with?

The design of the graphic is loosely based on the Art Nouveau movement. I have been cultivating the flow of free lines for many years. The color selection is done carefully to combine harmonizing shades.

The Butterfly is also new to the Spiderkites range. Where did the inspiration come from?

The butterfly is part of my collection of insects and birds. Living in a semi-wild area, as I do, it's impossible to miss small insects that animate the world around us.

What else do you keep yourself busy with?

I have too many ideas and not enough time to realize them. I'm constantly looking at designs and concepts. I also look at older designs and rework them. Nothing stands in isolation, everything is connected in one way or another.

What do you particularly appreciate about your design work?

I don't judge the designs myself. It's up to others to judge them. That is my basic criterion. When designing, however, it is crucial for me that the kites are absolutely reliable, stable and good-natured. I expect my designs to be everyday kites. And I want them to be the owner's favorite kite. They should also be clearly recognizable as a “Brasington design”.
